The Amex Gold card, one of our favorite cards for dining rewards, is offering its best-ever welcome bonus: 60,000 points

This article is brought to you by the Personal Finance Insider team. It has not been reviewed, approved, or otherwise endorsed by any of the issuers listed. • The American Express® Gold Card just increased its welcome bonus by 25,000 points.
  • Now, new cardholders can earn 60,000 points after you spend at least $4,000 in your first 6 months of account opening.
  • Not only does this new welcome offer get you more points, but you also have three additional months to meet the minimum spending requirement, compared to the previous offer.
  • The Amex Gold card is one of the best credit cards for dining, since it earns 4x points at restaurants and offers up to $10 in monthly statement credits when you use the card at participating restaurants.

If you want to book flights and hotel stays using points, you should know about the American Express Membership Rewards program. The Membership Rewards points you can earn with several Amex cards are transferable to a wide variety of airline and hotel partners, giving you lots of options for booking travel.

One of the quickest ways to earn more points is to apply for a credit card and earn its intro bonus — and one of the best Amex Membership Rewards cards just boosted its welcome offer significantly.

For a limited time, new cardholders can earn 60,000 points after you spend at least $4,000 in your first 6 months of account opening with the Amex Gold Card. That's a significant step up from the card's standard welcome bonus, and this card provides value well beyond the intro offer thanks to bonus rewards at restaurants and US supermarkets.

The standard Amex Gold Card welcome bonus has been 35,000 points after spending $4,000 in the first three months, but with this new offer, you can earn 25,000 more points, for a total of 60,000, and you get six months rather than three months to meet the minimum spending requirement.

There are several options for redeeming Membership Rewards points, but you'll generally get the most value when you redeem points with Amex's transfer partners. The program partners with more than a dozen airlines and three hotels, so you shouldn't have trouble finding a program that gets you where you want to go.

Travel website The Points Guy values MR points at 2 cents apiece when you redeem them for travel, so using that valuation the 60,000-point bonus on the Amex Gold is worth $1,200.

The Amex Gold is hard to beat for dining rewards and benefits

The Amex Gold Card has a $250 annual fee (See Rates), which is on the high end — though significantly lower than the $550 fee for The Platinum Card® from American Express.

The good news is it's not hard to recoup a good deal of that annual fee by using the card's monthly statement credit. You can get up to $10 back each month when you use the card at participating restaurants and delivery platforms, including GrubHub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth's Chris Steak House, Boxed, and participating Shake Shacks.

If you get $10 back from the statement credit each month, you're getting $120 off dining purchases each year, effectively reducing the annual fee to $130. The Amex Gold card also offers an airline fee credit of up to $100 each year, but The Points Guy reports that this benefit will be removed in 2022. That's not necessarily a bad thing; hopefully Amex replaces this perk with another more dining-focused benefit.

Beyond those perks, the Amex Gold Card earns 4x points at restaurants worldwide and 4x points at US supermarkets (on the first $25,000 spent each year, then 1x). Thanks to these high rates of return, it's one of our favorite cards for both dining purchases and for buying groceries (at US supermarkets).

It's not clear how long this 60,000-point offer will be around, so don't wait to apply!
