Apple stock has best day in nearly five years, boosting Dow
Apple Inc. AAPL, +7.04% shares enjoyed their strongest one-day gain in nearly five years on Wednesday, as stocks bounced back from a Christmas Eve rout with record gains. Apple shares gained 7.04% on the day, their best single-session percentage gain since April 24, 2014, according to information from Dow Jones Market Data. That increase added a bit more than 70 points to the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +4.98% which recorded its largest single-day points gain in history by adding 1,086 points. Apple is still having a rough year despite Wednesday’s gains, falling 7.1% so far in 2018 and 32.3% off its all-time high reached in October. Apple remains behind Microsoft Corp. MSFT, +6.83% in market capitalization, after ceding its title as most valuable public company to the Windows maker last month. At its closing price of $157.27, Apple was worth $745.8 billion, according to FactSet, while Microsoft had a market valuation of $772.1 billion. Google parent company Alphabet Inc. GOOG, +6.48%GOOGL, +6.42% worth $725.8 billion, and Amazon.com Inc. AMZN, +9.45% worth $719.2 billion, trailed Apple and Microsoft.
