Mr Gove told Sky News vaccine passports will not be required to attend sporting events, the theatre, or go to the pub. The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster stressed that getting as many people vaccinated as possible was in the collective interest of Britain.

Kay Burley asked: “Do I need to have a vaccine passport in order to go to the pub?”

The Conservative MP said: “No. I think the most important thing to do is make sure that we vaccinate as many people as possible.

“The most important thing is to make sure we get as many people as possible, starting with the vulnerable and then those that work on the frontline of the NHS vaccinated effectively.”

The Sky News host replied: “Will I need a vaccine passport to go to the theatre or a sporting event?”

Mr Gove said: “No, I don’t think so.”

Ms Burley asked: “Then how are you going to convince people to have these vaccines because there is a significant minority who do not want to have them?”

Mr Gove responded: “There is and I do think that we need to persuade them that taking the vaccine is in all of our collective interest.”

However, on Monday newly-appointed vaccine minister Nadhim Zawahi toldBBC Radio 4’s World at One: “We are looking at the technology, and of course a way of people being able to inform GP if they have been vaccinated.

“Restaurants, bars, cinemas and other venues, sports venues, will probably also use that system as they have done with the app.”
