The radio presenter launched a stinging slapdown of the SNP amid renewed calls for a second vote on Scottish independence. Nicola Sturgeon has already spoken of her ambition to hold a new referendum following the SNP victory in the Scottish elections last week. Mr Dolan argued the First Minister was acting like a “dictator” and said the pandemic has provided a “glorious” advert for the benefits of remaining in the Union.

Mr Dolan told listeners to his TalkRADIO show: “Nicola Sturgeon is behaving like a dictator.

“She hasn’t got the Raybands yet, the Kalashnikov or the military fatigues but give it time.

“Falling short of a majority and having spent the elections telling everyone are focus was recovery post-pandemic.

“Within seconds of the polls closing, she proudly announced she will pursue a referendum.”

He continued: “If necessary through the courts at the expense of Scotland far more pressing issues.

“Like crumbling public services and an economy ravaged by lockdown.

“This pandemic has been the biggest most glorious advert for the union.

“A joined-up medical approach, a world-class vaccine rollout and a trusted UK economy able to borrow hundreds of billions of pounds at almost no cost.”

SNP should be focused on 'recovery' says Nadine Dorries

The rant comes after Tory MSP Murdo Fraser told BBC Newsnight: “[The 2014 referendum] was on the back of a situation where the entire Scottish Parliament voted in favour of that referendum taking place.

“There was a national consensus that that question that had never been put to the Scottish people in 300 years should be put.

“The whole country engaged in that debate, a debate that we were told would be a once-in-a-generation event.

“And we reached a clear conclusion that the people of Scotland wanted to remain as part of the United Kingdom.”

He continued: “Now we are in a hugely different scenario now because we are only just seven years on from that last vote which we were told was a once in a generation vote.

“There is no consensus around reholding that referendum.

“As we saw in the vote last week half the population at least don’t think this is the right time to revisit this question.

“So unlike 2014 when the situation was we have a consensus about proceeding now the country is split right down the middle and nothing could be more divisive than the SNP for their selfish reasons trying to proceed with another referendum.”
