Nicola Sturgeon to defy Boris Johnson’s England border rules ‘Don’t go far enough’
Nicola Sturgeon: Tougher travel restrictions are ‘essential’
The Scottish First Minister voiced her opposition to plans for tighter checks to be carried out on travellers arriving into the UK. Speaking at her daily coronavirus briefing, Nicola Sturgeon said that Boris Johnson’s planned travel quarantine proposal was insignificant and insisted Scotland would pursue a separate strategy to that of Westminister if an agreement could not be reached on a more “comprehensive system.” Arguing tighter restrictions were essential to prevent new strains getting into the country, the SNP leader stated: “I am concerned that the proposal does not go far enough.”
Ms Sturgeon continued: “I have made that point strongly in the four-nations discussion we have just had today.
“So while the Scottish Government will initially emulate the UK Government’s steps on enhancing quarantine arrangement we will be seeking urgently to persuade them to go much further.
“Indeed to move to a comprehensive system of supervised quarantine.
“Giving the obvious practical issues involved we are very clear that our preference is to have consistent quarantine rules across the UK but if there is no agreement to go further on a four nations basis will be considering going further ourselves.”
