Vladimir Putin gave Trump a football as present – but US agents took no chances

Vladimir Putin gave Donald Trump a World Cup football as a present.

The Russian President handed over his gift to Mr Trump saying: "the ball’s in your court".

Speaking at a press conference at the end of a summit between the two men held in Helsinki, Finland, Mr Trump said he would give the ball to his 12-year-old son Barron.

But it seems that the US Secret Service were not taking any chances.

One of the agents was spotted passing the football through a security scanner.

Bill Neely, who is the Chief Global Correspondent for NBC News, and was at today’s press conference, spotted the cautious agent.

He tweeted: "I just saw a US Secret Service agent put the soccer ball Putin gave Trump through a security scanner outside the Pres. Palace.

"He didn’t smile when I joked about it."

The gift of a football was just one of a number of surreal moments in the press conference, which lasted almost an hour.

In it Vladimir Putin has said he wanted Donald Trump to win the US Presidential election.

While Donald Trump slammed his own intelligence services while praising the Kremlin.

After Putin assured him Russia didn’t meddle in the election, the US President declared: "There was no collusion – I didn’t know the President.

"There was nobody to collude with."
