Angela Rayner looks unimpressed as Commons erupts at Rishi Sunak’s PMQs swipe

Rishi Sunak mocks Keir Starmer with Angela Rayner dig in PMQs

Rishi Sunak took a brutal swipe at Sir Keir Starmer for praising Margaret Thatcher rather than his own deputy Angela Rayner during a rowdy PMQs.

The Labour leader infuriated some within his party after using an interview over the weekend to pay tribute to the former Conservative prime minister.

Tory MP Michael Fabricant raised Sir Keir’s praise of Baroness Thatcher in a question to Mr Sunak.

In response, the Prime Minister said: “I am always happy to welcome new Thatcherites from all sides of this House.

“But it does say something about the Leader of the Opposition that the main female strong leader that he can praise is Margaret Thatcher and not his own fantastic deputy.”

It comes after the Labour leader praised Baroness Thatcher in an apparent bid to woo Tory voters.

In an article for the Sunday Telegraph, he named the ex-Conservative politician alongside former Labour prime ministers Tony Blair and Clement Attlee.

Sir Keir said: “Every moment of meaningful change in modern British politics begins with the realisation that politics must act in service of the British people, rather than dictating to them.

“Margaret Thatcher sought to drag Britain out of its stupor by setting loose our natural entrepreneurialism.”

But Sir Keir’s comments prompted mocking from Conservative MPs.

He also infuriated some on the left of his party with the tribute, while Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf said his remarks were “an insult” to Scotland.
